Kusaug NPP Members Condemn Threats and Intimidation Ahead of Presidential Primaries

The Kusaug NPP members have issued a statement condemning threats and intimidation against their colleagues supporting Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in the upcoming presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026. The statement, signed by 29 representatives, asserts that the numerical strength of Kusaug delegates alone is insufficient to determine the outcome of the primaries, and any claims suggesting otherwise are misleading and intended to inflame tensions.
The statement emphasizes that support for Dr. Bawumia is a lawful and strategic political decision, aimed at securing long-term Kusaug interests through inclusion and constructive engagement. Attempts to coerce or intimidate Kusaug NPP members to support alternative candidates are deemed unacceptable and presumptuous.
The Kusaug NPP members also call for the separation of chieftaincy and politics, emphasizing that the Overlordship of Kusaug is established legally, traditionally, and politically, and must not be exploited for partisan aims. The statement warns that combining the two institutions weakens both and jeopardizes Kusaug’s unity and peace.
The group has called on the Kusaug Traditional Council and security agencies to intervene and address the threats and intimidation. “We remain committed to peace, legality, democratic choice, and respect for traditional authority – but we will not submit to violence or fear,” the statement reads.

STATEMENT ON THREATS AND INTIMIDATION AGAINST
KUSAUG NPP MEMBERS SUPPORTING DR BAWUMIA
29 January 2026
This statement is issued in response to repeated efforts to intimidate and threaten Kusaug members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) concerning
our lawful participation in the party’s presidential primaries scheduled for 31 January 2026.
1. Electoral Reality
The numerical strength of Kusaug delegates alone is insufficient to
determine the outcome of the NPP presidential primaries. Any
assertion to the contrary is misleading and intended to inflame
tensions without a factual basis.
2. Legitimate and Strategic Political Choice
Support for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia by Kusaug NPP members is a
lawful and strategic political decision. It is made in good faith and
aims to secure long-term Kusaug interests through inclusion and
constructive engagement, not marginalisation.
3. Rejection of Coercion
Attempts to coerce, intimidate, or direct Kusaug NPP members to support alternative candidates are presumptuous, uninformed, and
unacceptable. Kusaug NPP members are fully capable of assessing
political options and determining what best serves their collective
and Kusaug’s interests within the NPP.
4. Illegality of Threats and Violence
Any threat of violence, intimidation, or harm arising from internal
party choices is unlawful, reckless, and a direct threat to public order. Such conduct must cease immediately.
5. Separation of Chieftaincy and Politics
We firmly believe that the ongoing politicisation of our chieftaincy
erodes the authority of our Overlord. The Overlordship of Kusaug
is established legally, traditionally, and politically and must not be
exploited for partisan aims. We also hold that chieftaincy is a
lifelong, sacred, and enduring institution, whereas politics is competitive, elective, and cyclical, subject to contest in every term.
Combining the two weakens both: it transforms elections into
proxy chieftaincy conflicts and turns chieftaincy disputes into
political crises, with serious repercussions for Kusaug’s unity and
peace. Ultimately, when chieftaincy becomes politicised, tradition suffers; and when politics is excessively tribalised, democracy itself is jeopardised.
6. Assertion of Rights
Kusaug NPP members reserve our full constitutional right to lawful
political participation and personal security. These rights will not
be surrendered to fear, intimidation, or coercion.
7. Call to Traditional Authority
We respectfully call on the Kusaug Traditional Council and all
well-meaning leaders and elders to urgently caution any
individuals engaging in threats or intimidation. Kusaug is a
peaceful society, but peace cannot coexist with impunity.
8. Call to Security Agencies
We formally call on the Ghana Police Service and the Military
to immediately investigate, prevent, and decisively address any
acts or threats of intimidation, violence, or incitement related to
the forthcoming primaries, to protect lives, maintain public order, and safeguard the integrity of the democratic process.
We remain committed to peace, legality, democratic choice and respect for traditional authority—but we will not submit to violence or fear.
