President Mahama Hails Armed Forces’ Role in Restoring Peace in Bawku

President of the Republic and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has commended the Ghana Armed Forces for their professionalism and restraint in helping to restore relative peace and stability in Bawku and its surrounding areas, following periods of heightened tension and conflict.
President Mahama gave the commendation today January 23, 2026 while addressing officers, soldiers, defence civilian staff, and invited guests at the 2025 annual West African Soldiers’ Social Activity (WASA), describing the conduct of the Armed Forces as exemplary.
“Peace and security are the bedrock of development, and the professional conduct of the Ghana Armed Forces in Bawku has significantly contributed to the relative calm we are witnessing today,” President Mahama said.
Praise for Security Operations
The President specifically praised the success of Operation Gong-Gong and Operation Maida Buuri, noting that the operations had played a crucial role in stabilising the area.
“I wish to commend the collective efforts of the Armed Forces under Operation Gong-Gong and Operation Maida Buuri in Bawku and its environs,” he stated. “Your restraint, your discipline, and your adherence to the highest standards of military professionalism deserve the nation’s most profound admiration.”
President Mahama said the Armed Forces had carried out their mandate with respect for human rights and in close collaboration with civil authorities and local communities.
Government Commitment to Lasting Peace
The President assured residents of Bawku and other affected areas that government remains committed to consolidating the gains made and ensuring sustainable peace.
“Government remains fully committed to working closely with the security services, traditional authorities, and local communities to secure lasting peace in Bawku and throughout other affected areas,” he said.
He stressed that peace in Bawku is essential not only for the people of the area but also for national development and regional stability.
Tribute to Sacrifice
President Mahama acknowledged the sacrifices made by officers and soldiers deployed to conflict-prone areas, noting that some had paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.
“These achievements have not come without sacrifice. Some of our brave men and women have paid the ultimate price, while others bear life-altering injuries sustained in the line of duty,” he said.
He led a moment of silence in honour of fallen personnel and reaffirmed government’s support for their families.
Call for Continued Professionalism
The President urged officers and soldiers to remain disciplined and professional as they continue to safeguard peace across the country.
“I therefore urge all officers, soldiers, and defence civilian staff to remain disciplined, professional, and loyal in the pursuit of this noble calling,” President Mahama said.
He reiterated his commitment as Commander-in-Chief to ensure the Armed Forces are well-resourced and motivated to carry out their constitutional mandate.
The President’s remarks come amid ongoing efforts by government and security agencies to consolidate peace in Bawku and prevent a resurgence of violence in the area.
