Condemning Violence: AWLN Ghana strongly condemns the brutal assault of a woman by her husband in Accra, calling it a “barbaric” and “dehumanizing” act

The African Women Leaders Network (AWLN) Ghana Chapter has strongly condemned the brutal assault of a woman by her husband in Accra, captured on a viral video. The incident has sparked outrage and concern, with AWLN Ghana describing it as “barbaric” and “dehumanizing”.

In a statement, AWLN Ghana Chairperson, Dr. Charity Binka, appealed to the police to apply the full weight of the law in dealing with the case, emphasizing that Ghana will not tolerate gender-based violence. The organization is also urging law enforcement agencies to prioritize domestic violence cases, ensure swift response and protection for victims, and hold offenders accountable.

The incident comes on the heels of another tragic event, the Akyempim tragedy, where a man killed his wife and six children. AWLN Ghana notes that these atrocities are not isolated incidents, but rather a deeply entrenched culture of silence, impunity, and normalization of violence within homes.

The organization is calling on the government to intensify education on the Domestic Violence Act 2007 and strengthen social protection systems to shield women and children. AWLN Ghana is also appealing to neighbors, community leaders, and families to speak up and not treat domestic violence as a “family business”.

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has also condemned the incident, describing it as a “national concern” and urging the public to report suspected cases of abuse.
