The Nkoko Nkitinkiti Programme is a poverty-alleviation programme – Minister for Food and Agriculture Hon. Eric Opoku

Minister for Food and Agriculture Hon. Eric Opoku, together with President Mahama, officially launched the Nkoko Nkitinkiti Programme, describing it as a key mechanism for poverty reduction and rural transformation.

Speaking passionately, the Minister emphasised that the programme is not merely about boosting poultry numbers, but about improving livelihoods. He said:

“The Nkoko Nkitinkiti Programme is a poverty-alleviation programme,” and pledged that it will target vulnerable communities, youth and women farmers to ensure they benefit from the initiative.

According to the Minister, the scheme forms part of a wider government strategy to strengthen domestic food production, reduce import dependence, and create employment opportunities in the agricultural sector. He noted that Ghana currently spends significant foreign exchange on poultry imports, and that local production offers economic, social and food-security benefits.

Hon. Opoku highlighted that under the Nkoko Nkitinkiti Programme, farmers will receive support in the form of improved breeds, feed, veterinary services and access to structured markets, all designed to lift them out of subsistence farming and into viable agribusiness.

He urged participants at the launch to view the intervention as a “job-creation engine” and a “pathway out of poverty”.

The launch event in Kumasi marks the beginning of the nationwide roll-out of Nkoko Nkitinkiti, as the Ministry intensifies efforts to transform poultry farming into a driver of rural prosperity and poverty alleviation.
