For years, the rhythm of life in Damang, a vibrant community in the Prestea-Huni Valley Municipality of Ghana’s Western Region, was measured not by the rising sun, but by the weight of a yellow jerrycan.
Before the first school bell rang each morning, parents and children were already walking long distances in search of water. For many children, the journey meant arriving at school late, tired and distracted. For parents, it meant beginning every day with uncertainty. For healthcare workers, it meant providing care while constantly managing the challenges of limited access to clean water.
In a region celebrated for its rich mineral wealth, water remained the most precious resource of all; the simple, vital necessity needed to sustain everyday life. After all, water they say, is life – and here, it was in short supply.
Today, that story has changed.
The long walks have been replaced by the reassuring sound of water flowing from nearby taps. Children now begin their mornings preparing for school instead of searching for water. Families have more time for work, education and daily life. What was once a daily struggle has become a story of hope, dignity and opportunity.
This transformation was made possible through the Damang Water Supply System, a collaborative investment by the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation and World Vision Ghana, designed to complement earlier small-town water supply systems provided by the Foundation in the community.
The new system represents a significant expansion of water access infrastructure in Damang, featuring a 160-cubic-metre storage facility, 51 solar panels supported by four solar farms, 18 standpipes, two hydrants, and household connections serving more than 200 households, alongside schools and healthcare facilities.
With an investment of US$480,000, the project goes beyond providing clean water; it is designed to improve health, restore valuable time to families and establish a sustainable system that the community can own and maintain for generations.
The Gift of Time
The greatest impact of the Damang Water Supply System cannot be measured by kilometres of pipelines or engineering designs. It is measured in the hours returned to the people of Damang.
Every morning reclaimed from water collection is another morning spent learning, working or caring for loved ones. Children now arrive at school on time, refreshed and ready to learn. Parents can focus on providing for their families instead of worrying about where the day’s water will come from.
What was once a daily burden has become a daily opportunity.
Health Restored
The benefits extend far beyond households.
At the community health facility, reliable access to clean water has transformed the delivery of healthcare. Healthcare workers can maintain the hygienic conditions essential for safe treatment, while expectant mothers can deliver their babies in a cleaner, and more hygienic environment.
For the entire community, access to safe water also means reducing the risks associated with waterborne diseases, contributing to healthier families and improved quality of life.
A Community Taking Ownership
One of the most remarkable aspects of the project is that it was designed not only to provide water, but also to empower the people who depend on it.
The people of Damang are not simply beneficiaries of the system; they are its custodians.
Before the project was handed over, members of the community were trained through the local Water and Sanitation (WATSAN) Committee to oversee the operation and maintenance of the water system, monitor water quality and manage a community revenue collection mechanism that will help sustain the infrastructure for years to come.
As Moses Asumaku, Secretary of the local WATSAN Committee, explains, the project addressed one of the community’s most pressing needs while equipping residents with the knowledge and responsibility to protect this vital resource for future generations.
This sense of ownership is helping to ensure that the impact of the project will endure long after construction has been completed. By placing responsibility in the hands of the community, the project has laid the foundation for a sustainable water system that will serve Damang for years to come.
