Alan Kyerematen left the NPP to form his Movement out of bitterness, Rebranding it as the United Party (UP) is still not the answer – Charles Owusu Juanah Esq.

Charles Owusu Juanah Esq., a prominent legal practitioner and Lawyer for the National Cathedral project, offered a critical perspective on Alan Kyerematen’s political journey.

Juanah ESQ contended that Kyerematen’s departure from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was driven by personal grievances rather than a genuine desire for political reform. He argued that merely rebranding his movement as the United Party (UP) does not address the underlying issues within Ghana’s political landscape.

Alan Kyerematen, a former Trade and Industry Minister, resigned from the NPP in September 2023, citing internal divisions and what he perceived as unfair treatment within the party. Subsequently, he established the Movement for Change, positioning it as a platform for national transformation. On October 16, 2025, Kyerematen officially rebranded the movement as the United Party (UP), aiming to challenge the dominance of the NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC)

Juanah expressed skepticism about Kyerematen’s motivations, suggesting that his exit from the NPP was more about personal dissatisfaction than a commitment to systemic change. He emphasized that political movements should be rooted in a genuine desire to serve the public and address national issues, rather than stemming from personal conflicts.

While Alan Kyerematen’s rebranding of his movement as the United Party (UP) signifies a new chapter in his political endeavors, Juanah cautioned that without addressing the core issues of governance and political integrity, such efforts may fall short of effecting real change. He called for a more profound commitment to national development and unity, beyond personal ambitions and superficial transformations.
