Legal Aid Commission must have a dedicated fund like NHIS levy – Dwinfo Adusei Sadik, Principal Legal Officer of A/R Legal Aid Commission

Dwinfo Adusei Sadik, Principal Legal Officer of the Ashanti Regional Legal Aid Commission, has called for the establishment of a dedicated funding source for the Legal Aid Commission, similar to the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) levy.
Speaking on Kessben FM, Mr. Sadik stressed that access to justice is just as essential as access to healthcare, and therefore deserves consistent and reliable funding. “Just like the NHIS has a levy to ensure every Ghanaian can access healthcare, the Legal Aid Commission also needs a dedicated fund to ensure that the poor and vulnerable can access legal services,” he stated.
He explained that the current financial constraints faced by the Commission limit its ability to serve the growing number of people who need legal assistance, especially in criminal and civil cases.
Mr. Sadik argued that a dedicated legal aid fund would enable the Commission to expand its operations, recruit more lawyers, establish offices in more districts, and increase public education on legal rights.
He urged policymakers and Parliament to give urgent attention to this need, emphasizing that justice must not be reserved for the wealthy. “A Legal Aid Fund will ensure that justice delivery in Ghana is truly fair and inclusive,” he concluded.
