The National Identification Authority (NIA) has issued a press release to clarify misinformation circulating on social media regarding the validity period of the Ghana Card. A flyer had suggested that the validity period of the Ghana Card would be reduced from ten (10) years following an amendment to the law.

However, the NIA has stated that no such amendment has been made or proposed. The Ghana Card remains valid for ten (10) years from the date of issuance, after which it must be renewed as required by law.

Misrepresented Comments

The NIA explained that comments made by the Executive Secretary, Mr. Wisdom Kwaku Deku, at a recent media engagement had been misrepresented. Mr. Deku’s remarks reflected a proposal that future reviews could consider a shorter update interval for the Ghana Card, given the rapid pace of technological advancement and the evolving uses of the card.

The NIA emphasized that the current ten-year renewal requirement remains essential due to the physical card’s estimated lifespan and the expected changes in cardholders’ personal features over that period.

Public Assurance

The NIA urges the public to treat the circulating information as incorrect and assures Ghanaians that the authority remains committed to delivering a secure, reliable, and future-ready national identity system.

The NIA encourages citizens to rely on official sources of information and to report any suspicious or unverified information regarding the Ghana Card or any other NIA-related matters.
