I caused the separation of the Okyeame group because I was so hungry after returning from the USA – Okyeame Kwame

Okyeame Kwame has opened up about the real reason behind the split of the legendary Hiplife duo, Akyeame, comprising himself and Okyeame Kofi.
Speakingwith Mr Bonez on Kessben TV, Mr. Bonez, the rapper, admitted that the group’s separation was largely his doing, driven by economic hardship and the urgent need to survive after returning from the United States.
“I caused the separation of the Okyeame group because I was so hungry after returning from the USA,” he confessed. “My partner, Okyeame Kofi, was then working with Fox FM, so I had to move on to find shows to play.”
The Akyeame duo, once a household name in Ghana’s music scene, made a significant impact in the late 1990s and early 2000s with hits like M’asan Aba, Brebre Obaa Hemaa, and Adonko. Their lyrical chemistry and creative storytelling helped lay the foundation for modern Ghanaian Hiplife. However, fans were left puzzled when the group eventually went silent, sparking speculation about internal conflicts or fallout.
Okyeame Kwame’s latest revelation, however, sheds new light on the circumstances. His return from the United States, he explained, was met with tough financial realities.
At the time, his partner, Okyeame Kofi, had secured a stable job with Fox FM in Kumasi, which meant his availability for music and touring was limited. With little income and mounting pressure to make ends meet, Okyeame Kwame made the difficult decision to pursue a solo career.
“It wasn’t because we had a fight or anything like that,” he clarified. “It was purely a matter of survival. I needed to find shows to play, money to eat, and something to keep me going. Kofi was doing well at Fox FM, but I didn’t have that luxury.”
