Galamsey operators are strategic, They always change their leadership and let people who are members of the current Government be their leaders – Hon Joseph Azumah reveals

The Member of Parliament for Adansi Akrofuom, Hon. Joseph Azumah, has stated that those involved in illegal mining, commonly known as Galamsey are not merely reckless lawbreakers, but highly strategic actors who carefully adapt to political changes in Ghana.
Speaking on Kessben FM, Hon. Azumah disclosed that galamsey operators are known to swiftly reorganize their leadership whenever a new government assumes power.
According to him, they deliberately replace their top figures with individuals who have political ties to the incoming administration. This calculated move, he says, is designed to shield their operations and maintain influence regardless of the political party in power.
“People in galamsey are very strategic. When a new government comes to power, they change their leadership and let people who are members of the new government be their leaders,” Hon. Azumah revealed.
This revelation underscores the deeply entrenched and systemic nature of illegal mining in Ghana. Despite numerous government crackdowns, anti-galamsey task forces, and public outcries over the environmental and social consequences of illegal mining, the problem persists, argely due to political interference and protection.
