Kusaug NDC leaders denounce the purported state-sponsored assault in Bawku

The Kusaug Traditional Area’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) constituency leaders have denounced what they call a “state-sponsored assault” against Bawku’s traditional symbols and citizens.

Representatives from the constituencies of Binduri, Bawku Central, Pusiga, Tempane, and Zebilla spoke out against a violent incident on July 13 during a news conference on Tuesday, July 15. They said the incident involved armed people of Mamprusi background who were supposedly escorted by the military.

According to the executives, the attackers not only inflicted harm on civilians but also burned the statue of the Bawku Naba, an act they described as a direct attack on the cultural heritage of Kusaug.

“The people of Kusaug woke up to what can only be described as a state-sponsored assault, not only on civilians but on the very soul and authority of our traditional leadership.

“We do not condone any violence, but no civilised or lawful state responds by attacking innocent women and schoolchildren in various schools and injuring two of them. This is not law enforcement—it is state terrorism,” the group said.

The press conference heightens worries about Bawku’s worsening security, where several conflicts have thwarted attempts to bring about peace.
