EC Chair and Deputies Must Step Down Before Any Petition Is Filed – Twum-Barimah

Alexander Twum-Barimah, the Deputy Director-General of the Narcotics Control Commission, has made a bold call for the immediate resignation of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) Chairperson and her deputies, questioning their continued stay in office amidst growing public concerns.

Speaking on Business Edge with Kwasi Afriyie on Metro TV, Twum-Barimah expressed disbelief at the EC leadership’s refusal to step down, stating that their departure should happen even before any formal petition is brought against them.

“I don’t understand why the Electoral Commission Boss and her deputies are still at post,” he said. “They must go before any petition comes against them.”

Though he did not specify the reasons behind his call, his remarks reflect a rising wave of public dissatisfaction following recent controversies surrounding electoral processes, including disputed by-elections and concerns about transparency in voter registration and vote tabulation.

Twum-Barimah’s comments come amid heightened political tensions and calls from sections of civil society and opposition groups for reform within the Electoral Commission.
