Food prepared under the Ghana School Feeding Programme was poured away following a heated confrontation between programme officials and individuals alleged to be executives of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Eyewitnesses report that the altercation erupted just before the midday meal was to be served to primary school pupils. The conflict, which allegedly centered around the control and management of the feeding programme at the school, quickly escalated into a scuffle, leading to the dumping of food meant for dozens of hungry schoolchildren.
Videos and photos circulating on social media show buckets of cooked food discarded near the school’s kitchen area, while students, many of whom rely on the programme as their only daily meal, looked on helplessly. Some students reportedly left school early due to hunger and disappointment.
Sources say the clash was allegedly sparked by a dispute over the selection of caterers and accusations of political favoritism in awarding feeding contracts. Local officials overseeing the programme were reportedly confronted by individuals believed to be aligned with the NDC, who challenged the legitimacy of the current arrangement.
The Eastern Regional Secretariat of the School Feeding Programme has yet to issue an official statement, but local education authorities confirmed that they are investigating the matter. Police were called to the scene to restore calm, though no arrests have been reported.
Calls are growing for the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, which oversees the School Feeding Programme, to review the management system and insulate it from partisan interference.
