Let’s not politicize Galamsey – KOD urges Government to dispassionately address galamsey crisis

Co-host of Kessben Maakye, Kwabena Owusu Dankwah (KOD), has made a passionate appeal on Kessben FM, urging government and political actors to stop politicizing the fight against illegal mining, commonly known as Galamsey.
According to him, the devastating impact of galamsey on Ghana’s rivers and water treatment systems demands a unified, non-partisan approach.
Speaking on the popular morning show, KOD emphasized that the turbidity of Ghana’s major rivers continues to worsen, posing a direct threat to public health, agriculture, and national water security.
Turbidity, measured in NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Units), has soared in many water bodies, including the Pra, Ankobra, and Offin rivers. These rivers are now laden with heavy metals and silt, making it difficult and costly for the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to treat water for consumption.
Many treatment plants, including those in Daboase, Sekyere Hemang, and Barekese, have recorded dangerously high turbidity levels, sometimes exceeding 10,000 NTU, while the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a safe level of 5 NTU for treated water.
KOD insisted that galamsey is not just an environmental problem, but a governance and public health crisis. He believes that government must take a firm, dispassionate stance, devoid of political interference or favoritism.
