Thank You Tour Not About Positioning Candidates – NPP’s George Krobea Asante Clarifies

George Krobea Asante, Deputy National Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has refuted claims that the party’s ongoing Thank You Tour is a strategy to position a particular candidate ahead of the 2028 elections.

Speaking on Kessben TV’s Maakye show Monday morning, Mr. Krobea Asante acknowledged that the NPP is facing one of its most difficult periods but urged party members to remain calm and strategic.
“These are not normal times for the NPP. When you’re going through challenges, you need to be tactical and strategic,” he said.

Responding to growing concerns and political speculation, Mr. Krobea Asante stated clearly that the Thank You Tour is not a new or suspicious activity. He explained that the tradition dates back to the days of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, and it is a common post-election practice at all levels of the party.
“After every national election, every MP, whether they win or lose, is expected to go back to thank their constituents. This has always been part of NPP culture,” he said.

He added that the decision to embark on the current tour was taken by the National Council, the second-highest decision-making body in the party, and not by any single individual.

According to Mr. Krobea Asante, former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, who led the NPP in the 2024 elections, naturally plays a lead role in the tour. He noted that Bawumia made a humble request through the party’s General Secretary to have his former competitors in the flagbearer race officially invited to join the tour.
“This was a request from the former Vice President, and it was granted. It wasn’t about sidelining anyone,” he clarified.

He explained that following the party’s defeat in the 2024 elections, the NPP National Council set up an Election Review Committee to engage stakeholders and understand the reasons behind the party’s performance. That review process is what has led to the current tour, which is happening seven months after the election.
“This is not the first time we’re doing this. It’s part of our internal assessment and engagement process,” he stated.

Mr. Krobea Asante concluded by appealing to party members to avoid spreading assumptions or misinformation about the tour. He urged them to seek clarification and trust the party’s leadership. “Let’s not destroy ourselves with baseless assumptions. If you don’t understand something, ask questions. We are one family.”
