It’s not always about timing, We took the best interest of the club to let Ogum go – Sarfo Duku, Kotoko Communication Director

Asante Kotoko’s Communications Director, Sarfo Duku, has defended the club’s decision to part ways with head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum, stating it was in the club’s best interest despite the timing.

Speaking on Kessben FM, Duku emphasized that with six games left in the Ghana Premier League, the mutual termination was the right move for Kotoko’s future.

Kotoko announced earlier this week that they had reached a mutual agreement with Coach Ogum to end his tenure. The club is set to compensate him with a $16,000 package, comprising three months’ salary ($12,000) and a $4,000 severance payment.

The decision comes at a critical point in the season as Kotoko seeks to finish strongly in the Ghana Premier League. Though parting ways with a coach so late in the season is typically seen as risky, Duku believes the long-term benefits outweigh the short-term concerns.

“Football decisions are not always about timing, but about what’s best for the team’s performance and unity. We respect Coach Ogum’s contribution, but this is a new direction we must take,” he said.

Reports suggest that Karim Zito is set to take over as interim coach for the remaining six matches, bringing with him a wealth of experience from both club and national youth football.

Asante Kotoko fans and stakeholders will now look ahead with cautious optimism, hoping that the shake-up at the top can inspire a late surge in the league campaign.
