Galamasey Fight: The best way to end it is the “$h00t and kill policy” – NPP’s George Oppong

Lawyer George Oppong, a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has suggested that the best way to fight against illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey,” is to implement a “shoot to kill” policy for anyone caught engaging in the practice.
Oppong, who is known for his strong stance on several national issues, emphasized the devastating impact of galamsey on Ghana’s environment, particularly on water bodies, forests, and farmlands. He argued that illegal mining has reached such alarming levels that authorities must adopt more drastic and severe measures to halt the destruction caused by these unlawful activities.
Oppong speaking on Kessben Maakye with Wofa Kofi Appiah made in the context of ongoing efforts by the government to curb illegal mining activities, which have caused widespread environmental damage, including the pollution of major rivers like the Tano, Pra, and Ankobra. Despite several initiatives, including military-led operations and task forces, illegal mining continues to thrive in many parts of the country, largely due to the high demand for gold and the financial incentives associated with the trade.
Oppong’s “shoot to kill” proposal, while provocative, is rooted in his frustration with the inability of the authorities to effectively tackle galamsey. He argued that the current approach, which involves destroying illegal mining equipment and arresting offenders, has not been enough to deter miners from continuing their activities. According to Oppong, the government needs to take a more aggressive approach, one that sends a clear and uncompromising message about the consequences of engaging in illegal mining.
The fight against illegal mining remains one of the most pressing challenges facing Ghana today. Whether through harsh measures or more comprehensive strategies, finding a lasting solution to galamsey is critical for the future of the country’s natural resources and the livelihoods of its people.
