JUST IN: Barker-Vormawor finally granted ¢20k bail after 3 unsuccessful attempts
On Wednesday, October 16, following three failed efforts, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, the convenor of the Democracy Hub-organized anti-galamsey protest, was granted ¢20,000 bail.
Both the Circuit Court and the Accra High Court have previously rejected his requests for bail.
During a protest against galamsey, or illicit mining, which has seriously harmed Ghana’s ecology, Mr. Barker-Vormawor was taken into custody.
Police reports state that Mr. Barker-Vormawor was detained for participating in illegal acts during the protest; however, the specifics of his alleged misbehavior are still being looked into.
His taking the keys out of a police van that was stationed at the protest location was one of the events that resulted in his detention.
Notwithstanding these obstacles, the activist has not wavered in his opposition to galamsey, pushing for increased accountability in the battle against illicit mining as well as environmental changes.
