Electoral Commission Addresses NDC Concerns, Urges Dialogue Over Demonstration
The Electoral Commission (EC) has responded to concerns raised by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding the Provisional Voters Register, urging the party to engage in dialogue rather than demonstration.
At a press conference addressed by Samuel Tettey, Deputy Chairperson in charge of operations, the EC assured the public that almost all discrepancies identified in the Register have been corrected. The Commission emphasized its commitment to providing a robust and credible Voters Register for the December 2024 General Election.
The EC acknowledged the NDC’s concerns but emphasized that the discrepancies identified were not new and were being resolved through the Exhibition Exercise. The Commission explained that the Exhibition Exercise is a transparent process that allows citizens to verify their details and point out discrepancies, which are then corrected.
The EC also addressed the NDC’s call for a Forensic Audit, stating that it is premature and unnecessary. The Commission believes that the Exhibition Exercise is an audit in itself and that an independent body is not needed to audit the Register.
The Commission urged the NDC to trust in its ability to correct discrepancies and provide a credible Register. The EC also called on former President John Mahama to encourage his party to engage in discussions rather than demonstrations.
“The best way to ascertain the credibility and integrity of the 2024 Voters Register is the discussion table, not on the streets,” said Samuel Tettey.
The EC assured the public that it is committed to providing a transparent process that would demonstrate to the NDC that all their concerns have been resolved.
“We urge the public to trust the EC to do this again and again,” said Samuel Tettey.
