Mahama Ayariga’s motion against the vetting of two Supreme Court nominees falls flat, nominees vetted

Patricia Appiagyei, the chairperson of Parliament’s Appointments Committee, has dismissed a complaint made today by Bawku Central MP Mahama Ayariga prior to the confirmation of two nominations for the Supreme Court.

Because he believed that Article 128 (1) of the 1992 Constitution places a cap on the number of Justices, Mr. Ayariga has contested President Akufo-Addo’s ability to nominate more than nine Justices to the Supreme Court.

The Committee discussed the matter and decided to temporarily halt the screening process due to his objection.

But during a break, Chairperson Appiagyei rejected Mr. Ayariga’s protest, stating it was without substance.

Following additional debate, Mr. Ayariga’s motion was finally put to a vote, receiving seven votes in favor and seven against. “Therefore, the motion is denied. We are moving forward with the screening because of that,” Mrs. Appiagyei stated.

The two nominees are Professor Richard Frimpong Oppong, a legal academic and fellow of the Ghana Academy of Sciences, and Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko Essah, a justice of the Court of Appeal.
