“MELPWU Calls Off Strike, Returns to Negotiation Table with Employers”
The Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union (MELPWU) has called off its strike and resumed negotiations with its employers, following a meeting with the National Labour Commission (NLC). The NLC has ordered the parties to continue negotiations on conditions of service by June 26, 2024, and directed the Ministry of Finance to give the appropriate mandate to the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) to negotiate with the Union.
The Union has agreed to put on hold the industrial action, which was launched to demand better conditions of service, and has advised its members to return to work by June 24, 2024. The Union’s leadership has assured its members that it remains committed to protecting their collective interests and will not hesitate to take appropriate action if they feel shortchanged.
The Union has also condemned victimization and unlawful threats against its members by some facility managers and administrators, and has warned that such actions will be reported to the NLC.
The MELPWU has apologized to its clients for any suffering caused during the industrial action and has promised to continue serving them to the best of its professional ability.
The Union’s General Secretary, Dr. Cephas Kofi Akortor, and National Chairman, Patrick Nsobilla Asebga, signed the communique, which was copied to various stakeholders, including the Ministers of Health, Finance, and Employment, as well as the Chief Director of the Ministry of Health and the Executive Secretary of the NLC.
