ECOWAS Celebrates 49th Anniversary with Inter-School Debate
To commemorate the 49th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, in collaboration with the ECOWAS secretariat in Ghana, hosted an electrifying inter-school debate on May 31, 2024. The theme, “Enhancing Regional Unity, Peace and Security,” brought together brilliant students from various schools to engage in a thought-provoking discussion.
Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong, set the tone for the debate, emphasizing the importance of engaging students in meaningful dialogue about ECOWAS’ role in promoting regional unity, peace, and security. He expressed hope that the debate would deepen the students’ understanding of regional integration and inspire innovative solutions to challenges.
Ambassador Baba Gana Wakil, Resident Representative of ECOWAS in Ghana, took it a step further, urging stakeholders to establish an ECOWAS Digital Club in senior high schools. This initiative would educate students about regional peace and security, cyber security, and data analytics. “Digital transformation should prioritize regional peace and security, which are fundamental to economic development,” he stressed.
Chief Director for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Ambassador Ramses J. Cleland, praised the students for their passion, critical thinking, and eloquence. He commended the participants for demonstrating knowledge and engaging in insightful discourse, fostering a culture of dialogue and critical thinking.
After a thrilling competition, Accra Girls’ Senior High School emerged victorious, followed by Nungua Senior High School in second place. Other participating schools, including Presbyterian Boys Senior High School, Achimota School, Christian Methodist Senior High School, and Lashibi Community Day Senior High School, also received recognition for their outstanding performances.
The event brought together esteemed guests, including members of the Diplomatic Corps, ECOWAS Secretariat representatives, government officials, and Foreign Ministry officers. All participating schools and students received certificates, celebrating their achievements and dedication to regional unity and peace.
