Elephants Pass Out After Getting Drunk
Elephants are one of the largest creatures in the animal kingdom but apparently, they can’t hold their booze very well. A couple dozen elephants were discovered by villagers in India that had passed out on the ground after they consumed too much alcohol.
The people in the Keonjhar district suspected that the giant animals got into their large pots of mahua, a traditional Indian liquor. “We went into the jungle at around 6 a.m. to prepare mahua and found that all the pots were broken and the fermented water (was) missing,” Naria Sethi said.
“We also found that the elephants were sleeping,” Sethi said. “They consumed the fermented water and got drunk.”
The herd was so drunk that even the villagers couldn’t wake the sleeping giants. They were forced to call in wildlife officials who ended up bringing drums to create enough noise to wake the group up. That’s probably not going to help with their hangover. The elephants did wake up and scattered away from the area.
Kartick Satyanarayan, a chief executive of Wildlife SOS, a non-profit that helps rescue and rehabilitate wildlife in India, said that he was unsure the elephants all took part in the sampling because “usually one elephant looks out for the rest of the herd so it seems a bit unusual.”
Unless the beverage smelled too good to resist considering elephants love mahua, which is made from the flower of the madhuca longifolia tree.
“They love it. It’s pure, it’s tasty, and it’s powerful. When they smell it, they can poke their trunks into kitchens or break down walls to get to it,” Satyanarayan said. “Once finished, they stagger back home, toppling the odd tree or house on the way.”
