We Are Tackling Water Hyacinth And Tree Stumps In Our Water Bodies – GMA Boss

The executive director of the Ghana Maritime Authority ,Mr Thomas K Alonsi has revealed that plans are rife to deal with the disturbing tree stumps and water hyacinth that have taken over the Volta river and other water bodies in Ghana.

Speaking to the Press in Accra he pointed out that the authority has recently acquired some machines ( Trash Skimmers ) to deal with the problem. The chief executive officer indicated that with respect to the tree stumps removal , a lot has been achieved over the years in an attempt to reduce the incidence of accidents on Volta lake .

He assured the nation that his outfit is doing everything to ensure the smooth Transportation on the lake and elsewhere.

This according to him will safeguard the safety of the Passangers who travel on these water bodies in order to reduce accidents on the lake. With respect to the trash skimmers ,he alluded to the fact that they are newly bought machines sent to certain parts of the of the lake to remove the water hyacinth that has been growing on the rivers and lakes. He said they are doing this in conjunction with the VRA to ensure travellers safety and comfort . As regards the tree Stumps, he assured the nation that most of them have been removed and that very soon all will be removed to enhance easy travel on the Volta lake.

The CEO spoke on wide range of developments in his office. Some of them have to do with the tackling of piracy and armed robbery on the high seas especially Gulf of Guinea. He told the Press that as a result of their vigilance, the incidence has gone down these days. He called for arrest and prosecution of errant foreign vessel who flout our Maritime laws, dumping of marine waste into our part of the sea. He also cautioned against Ghanaian agents who lead foreign vessels to flout our marine laws.

The CEO indicated that fighting these challenges requires all neighbouring countries to collaborate to nib these ills in the bud. He admitted that, Ghana alone cannot win the marine war. He assured the nation that GMA is doing everything possible to protect and safeguard our territorial waters with the support of the security agencies.
