UPDATE: Baffour Awuah granted GH¢50m bail after EOCO detention
Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah has been granted bail of GH¢50 million with three sureties after appearing before the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
The legislator voluntarily reported to EOCO’s offices at about 10 a.m. on Thursday, October 1, to assist with an ongoing investigation.
His appearance came after the Accra High Court issued an arrest warrant following EOCO’s claim that previous efforts to have him report for questioning had been unsuccessful.
The investigation involves allegations of criminal conspiracy, financial loss to SIC Savings and Loans, money laundering and tax-related offences, among other suspected breaches.
However, Mr Baffour Awuah has denied receiving GH¢2.2 million in legal fees and has also disputed EOCO’s account of its earlier attempts to secure his attendance.
EOCO has stressed that its investigations remain ongoing and cautioned against drawing conclusions about the MP’s culpability until the relevant investigative and judicial processes have been completed.
The development has also prompted a fresh challenge from Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who has urged EOCO to intensify efforts to identify and prosecute individuals allegedly financing and coordinating drug trafficking operations linked to Ghana.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, October 1, the Effutu MP questioned what he described as EOCO’s emphasis on the arrest and investigation of opposition politicians, arguing that similar urgency should be brought to major narcotics-related cases.
Mr Afenyo-Markin called on the anti-graft agency to broaden its investigations beyond individual suspects and pursue alleged financiers and organisers operating behind drug trafficking networks connected to Ghana.
His comments come amid heightened public interest in Ghana-linked narcotics investigations and EOCO’s handling of economic and organised crime cases.
The investigation involving Mr Baffour Awuah remains ongoing, with EOCO yet to conclude its probe
