Kufuor called Agyarko three times to contest NPP chairmanship – Joe Wise
Former President John Agyekum Kufuor personally called former Energy Minister Boakye Kyerematen Agyarko three times to encourage him to contest the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) National Chairmanship, former First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Joseph Osei-Owusu, popularly known as Joe Wise, has revealed.
According to Joe Wise, the former president believed Agyarko had the experience and qualities needed to take up the leadership role at the party’s national level.
The revelation adds to the growing attention surrounding Agyarko’s bid to become the NPP’s National Chairman. Agyarko has since formally entered the race and has been campaigning on a message centred on rebuilding, restructuring and rebranding the party.

In April 2026, Agyarko appointed Joe Wise as Senior Campaign Adviser and former Interior Minister Henry Quartey as Campaign Manager for his chairmanship campaign.
The latest revelation about Kufuor’s alleged calls highlights the level of encouragement Agyarko received from senior figures within the NPP before and during his decision to contest the position.
