Former NPP-USA Chairperson, Obaa Yaa Amponsah Frimpong, has officially filed her nomination to contest for the National First Vice Chairperson position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Obaa Yaa filed her completed nomination forms at the party’s headquarters in Asylum Down, Accra, on Thursday, marking her formal entry into the fiercely contested national executive race.
Accompanied by a large delegation of supporters from the diaspora, women organizers, and grassroots activists clad in party colours, her filing brought life to the NPP headquarters as cheers of “Obaa Yaa, the reliable leader” echoed through the premises.
Obaa Yaa, who served for eight years as Chairperson of the NPP-USA Branch, is seeking to bring her vast experience in diaspora mobilization, fundraising, and party organization to the national front. She is one of the longest-serving leaders of the NPP external branch and is widely credited with strengthening the NPP-USA chapter, expanding its membership, and consistently mobilizing financial and logistical support for the party during both the 2016, 2020 and 2024 electoral cycles.
Speaking to the media after filing her papers, Obaa Yaa said her decision to contest was driven by three key convictions: to champion the cause of women, to restore grassroots confidence, and to help reposition the NPP for victory in the 2028 general elections.
According to her, women remain the backbone of the NPP, forming the majority of polling station executives, canvassers and committed volunteers, yet they need a stronger voice and representation at the highest decision-making level.
“For years, our women have carried this party on their backs. They cook, they contribute, they campaign in the sun and in the rain, yet when decisions are being made, their voice is faint. I am coming to be the voice for women and to ensure our grassroots women are empowered, recognized and rewarded,” she stated to loud applause from her supporters.
She further pledged to work tirelessly to support the party’s flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, to secure victory in the 2028 general elections, describing him as the best hope for Ghana’s future.
“My mission is simple; to help rebuild a united, disciplined and formidable NPP capable of winning 2028. I have worked with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia from the diaspora and I know his vision for Ghana. I will champion that vision and help lead him and the NPP to victory in 2028,” she added.
Her campaign is anchored on what she describes as S.T.E.A.D.Y leadership — Steady, Transparent, Empowering, Accountable, Dependable and Yielding results. She promised to focus on grassroots empowerment, structural reorganization, diaspora re-engagement, and aggressive mobilization of women and youth.
Obaa Yaa argued that after the party’s painful defeat in the 2024 general elections, what the NPP needs is not infighting but steady and reliable leadership that can heal wounds, bridge the gap between the national leadership and the grassroots, and reconnect the party to its core base.
“We need to reorganize from the polling station to the national level. We need to listen to our people again. We need to make every party member feel valued. That is the leadership I bring,” she noted.
Obaa Yaa Amponsah Frimpong becomes one of the few women with extensive diaspora leadership experience to contest for the First Vice Chairperson slot, a position considered crucial in steering party affairs, acting in the absence of the National Chairman, and providing strategic guidance for party operations.
Her entry is expected to add significant momentum to the women’s representation conversation within the NPP and energize the diaspora community, which has long demanded greater inclusion in party decision-making.
Political analysts say her eight-year track record leading NPP-USA, one of the most influential external branches, gives her a competitive edge in terms of organizational experience, fundraising capacity and international exposure.
The NPP is expected to vet all aspirants from September 1 and conduct balloting in the coming weeks ahead of its National Delegates Conference scheduled for October 2026, where thousands of delegates will elect new national executives to lead the party’s rebuilding efforts ahead of 2028.
As the race heats up, Obaa Yaa has called for unity and decorum, urging all aspirants and their supporters to conduct a clean campaign that strengthens, rather than divides, the NPP.
“The NPP is bigger than any of us. Let us compete with ideas and respect. At the end of the day, we must remain one party with one common goal — to return to power to serve the people of Ghana,” she concluded.
