President Mahama announces push for direct Accra-Montego Bay flights
President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to fast-track the implementation of the Bilateral Air Services Agreement between Ghana and Jamaica, paving the way for direct flights between Accra and Montego Bay.
Speaking at a joint press conference after bilateral talks with Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness during his State Visit to Jamaica, President Mahama said the agreement is currently before Ghana’s Parliament and will be expedited to make it operational.
“We have to activate the Bilateral Air Services Agreement between us. It’s currently before our Parliament, and we’ll fast-track it so that it becomes operational, so that either national carriers between Jamaica and Ghana or third-party carriers can fly direct flights from Accra to Montego Bay,” the President said.
Mahama explained that the move is aimed at strengthening connectivity between the two countries and removing one of the major barriers to expanding trade, tourism, investment and people-to-people exchanges.
He noted that improved air connectivity would complement the broader cooperation agenda agreed upon during the bilateral talks, which covered areas including health, education, defence, culture and economic collaboration.
The President expressed confidence that direct flights would deepen the historic ties between Ghana and Jamaica by making travel easier for business people, tourists and members of the African diaspora.
