Mahama lays wreath in memory of late President Atta Mills
President John Dramani Mahama on Friday led the nation in honouring the memory of the late President John Evans Atta Mills by laying a wreath at the 14th Wreath-Laying Ceremony held at Asomdwee Park in Accra.
The solemn ceremony brought together government officials, members of the Mills family, leaders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), traditional authorities, clergy and other dignitaries to commemorate the life and legacy of Ghana’s third President of the Fourth Republic, who died in office on July 24, 2012.
President Mahama laid the first wreath on behalf of the people of Ghana, paying tribute to the late statesman for his dedicated service, integrity and commitment to democratic governance.
The ceremony also featured the laying of wreaths by representatives of the Mills family, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin , the traditional leaders and other state institutions, followed by prayers and a moment of silence in honour of the late President.
Addressing the gathering, President Mahama described Professor Mills as a leader whose humility, compassion and integrity continue to inspire the nation. He said the annual memorial serves not only as a time of remembrance but also as an opportunity to recommit to the values that guided the late President’s leadership.
He urged Ghanaians to uphold the principles of integrity, respect for democratic institutions, tolerance and selfless service, stressing that these ideals remain the greatest tribute to Professor Mills’ enduring legacy.
Professor John Evans Atta Mills served as President of Ghana from January 2009 until his passing on July 24, 2012. He is widely remembered for his peaceful leadership style, commitment to constitutional democracy and dedication to national unity.
