Greatest tribute to late President Atta Mills is living his principles- Mahama
President John Dramani Mahama has said the greatest tribute Ghanaians can pay to the late President John Evans Atta Mills is to uphold the values of integrity, democracy, compassion and service that defined his leadership.
Speaking at the 14th wreath-laying ceremony in honour of the late President Mills, Mahama reflected on the responsibilities entrusted to him by the Ghanaian people, saying he often draws inspiration from Mills’ “quiet wisdom and steady temperament.”
He said those enduring values continue to guide his leadership and remind him that every decision must serve the people of Ghana and strengthen democratic institutions that will outlive individual leaders.
“The greatest tribute we can pay to President Mills is not found in speeches, ceremonies or annual anniversaries,” Mahama stated. “It lies in our commitment to the principles that he cherished and lived for integrity in public life, respect for democratic institutions, tolerance of differing views, compassion for the vulnerable, and an unwavering belief that Ghana’s progress must benefit each and every one of its citizens.”
President Mahama described Mills’ vision of a peaceful, just and prosperous Ghana as “a work in progress,” pledging to continue walking in the footsteps of his predecessor.
He called on all Ghanaians to embrace the late President’s ideals, stressing that Professor Mills’ dream now belongs to the entire nation and requires the collective commitment of every citizen to bring it to fruition.
The solemn ceremony brought together government officials, members of the Mills family, leaders of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), traditional authorities, clergy and other dignitaries to commemorate the life and legacy of Ghana’s third President of the Fourth Republic, who died in office on July 24, 2012.
President Mahama laid the first wreath on behalf of the people of Ghana, paying tribute to the late statesman for his dedicated service, integrity and commitment to democratic governance.
The ceremony also featured the laying of wreaths by representatives of the Mills family, the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin , the traditional leaders and other state institutions, followed by prayers and a moment of silence in honour of the late President.
