Akosombo Dam spillage victims to receive compensation this year-Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has assured victims affected by the Akosombo and Kpong Dam spillage that compensation payments will begin this year once the ongoing verification and assessment processes are completed.
The President gave the assurance during the sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a 24-Hour Economy Model Market at Juapong in the Volta Region as part of his Resetting Ghana Tour.
Addressing residents, President Mahama acknowledged the severe hardship caused by the spillage, which displaced families and destroyed homes, farms, businesses and livelihoods across several communities in the Volta Region.
“The resilience of the people of this region has been tested in recent years,” he said, noting that government had remained fully engaged in addressing the aftermath of the disaster.
He explained that the verification, assessment and administrative processes required for compensation were nearing completion and pledged that the exercise would be concluded fairly, transparently and responsibly.
“Once this process is finalized, the Minister for Finance has made an allocation in this year’s budget to start the payment of compensation,” President Mahama stated.
He added that should the amount allocated in the 2026 Budget prove insufficient, government would provide additional funding in the next budget to ensure all eligible victims receive compensation.
“If the money allocated is not enough, allocation will be made in next year’s budget to continue the payments,” he assured.
Beyond compensation, President Mahama said government remained committed to supporting the long-term recovery of affected communities through programmes aimed at restoring livelihoods, rebuilding communities and strengthening resilience against future disasters.
The Akosombo Dam spillage, which affected thousands of residents in parts of the Volta Region, caused widespread flooding that destroyed homes, farms and businesses, leaving many families displaced.
