Fiscal discipline should not prevent the government from responding to urgent national concerns – Dr Kwasi Kyei argues

NPP and NDC communicators have clashed over the government’s fiscal discipline measures, flood relief efforts, debt management, and sanitation challenges during a discussion on Kessben FM’s Maakye programme.
The debate featured Dr Kwasi Kyei, former NPP communicator and National Coordinator for Persons with Disabilities, and Dr Frank Otuo Acheampong, a lecturer at Spiritan University and NDC communication team member.
Dr Kwasi Kyei argued that fiscal discipline should not prevent the government from responding to urgent national concerns, particularly the plight of flood victims. He questioned why a $200 million World Bank facility could not be used to support citizens facing difficulties while economic gains such as reduced inflation and lower policy rates are being highlighted.
He also raised questions about a drainage and sewerage project initiated under former President John Mahama’s administration in 2013, stating that concerns remain over the management and impact of funds allocated for the project.
However, Dr Frank Otuo Acheampong defended the government’s position, stating that the administration inherited significant financial obligations and has been working to address outstanding debts.
The discussion also touched on sanitation challenges and concerns over funds received from international development partners during the tenure of former Sanitation Minister Cecilia Abena Dapaah, with both sides debating the effectiveness of past interventions.
The communicators agreed that flooding requires a national approach beyond political differences, with calls for stronger measures to address the recurring challenge.
