Several residents living around the Weija enclave have been forced to flee their homes following the spillage of the Weija Dam, which has caused severe flooding in many communities.
Authorities responsible for the dam have over the years carried out seasonal spillages to reduce pressure on the facility and prevent possible structural damage.
However, this year’s exercise has left many residents stranded, with floodwaters reaching areas previously considered safe from the impact of the spillage.
According to affected residents, even communities located far from the dam have experienced heavy flooding, making this year’s incident one of the worst in recent times.
Many victims have abandoned their homes and sought shelter with relatives, friends, and neighbours whose houses were not affected by the floods. Others living in storey buildings say they have been trapped indoors for the past two days due to rising water levels.
Some residents disclosed an interview to Kessben Maakye show in Accra that, authorities had earlier warned them about the dangers associated with the spillage, but they never imagined the destruction would be this extensive.
“We are very far from the dam. Usually when they open the dam, the water does not get to this place, but this has been a different experience,” one resident lamented.
They also recalled a similar flooding incident about four years ago, though they insist the current situation appears far more devastating.
The flooding has displaced several families, destroyed properties, and disrupted normal life in the affected communities, with many residents calling for urgent government intervention and long-term solutions to prevent future occurrences.
