Chairman Wontumi Courts NPP Heavyweights Ahead of National Chairmanship Bid

Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, has officially signaled his intention to contest the New Patriotic Party’s National Chairmanship, kicking off his campaign with high-profile courtesy calls on the party’s flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and f
ormer President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
The meetings, held on Wednesday as part of Wontumi’s nationwide stakeholder engagements, mark the first formal steps in his bid for the top party position ahead of the NPP’s upcoming National Executive elections.
“Service, Unity, and Grassroots Mobilisation”
Accompanied by his campaign team, Wontumi told both leaders that his ambition is rooted in service, unity, and rebuilding the party from the grassroots up. He expressed appreciation for their sacrifices and leadership, particularly in guiding the NPP through its post-2024 election rebuilding phase.
“I reaffirmed my unwavering loyalty to the NPP and assured them of my commitment to supporting the broader vision of strengthening the Party towards victory in 2028,” Wontumi said after the meetings.
He emphasized that his campaign would be disciplined, respectful, and issue-based, pledging to avoid personal attacks, divisiveness, and intimidation. According to him, the focus must be on strengthening internal unity and protecting the party’s structures ahead of the next general election.
A Track Record of Grassroots Mobilisation
During the engagements, Wontumi highlighted his longstanding role in the NPP, pointing to his tenure as Ashanti Regional Chairman and his reputation for grassroots mobilisation and political visibility.
“My ambition is fully aligned with the broader objective of rebuilding the Party and positioning it strongly for victory in 2028,” he stated. “Rebuilding and energising the grassroots machinery remains essential to the NPP’s quest to recapture power.”
He also called for collective leadership, inclusiveness, and reconciliation within the party, stressing that “the NPP belongs to all its members and stakeholders.”
Seeking Guidance and Goodwill
Wontumi and his team said they sought the prayers, guidance, and goodwill of both Bawumia and Akufo-Addo as they embark on the campaign trail. They reiterated their commitment to the ideals of the NPP and pledged to contribute meaningfully to all party rebuilding efforts.
The stakeholder engagements are expected to continue nationwide as Wontumi positions himself as a candidate focused on unity and grassroots reorganisation.
The NPP has yet to officially open nominations for the National Executive elections. Party members looking to contest are expected to follow the NPP’s internal electoral guidelines once nominations are declared open.
