Microphones Without Morals?” — Ben Ephson Warns of Rising Ethical Breakdown in Media Space

Renowned media analyst and Editor-in-Chief of the Daily Dispatch Newspaper, Ben Ephson, has raised fresh concerns about declining ethical standards in today’s fast-expanding media landscape.

Speaking on press freedom and modern journalism, Ephson acknowledged that the growing number of media outlets and the use of multiple languages have helped broaden public understanding of national issues.

According to him, this diversity is a positive development that strengthens public discourse.

However, he cautioned that the same expansion has also opened the floodgates for untrained individuals to dominate the space without proper regard for journalistic ethics.

“Some people sit behind consoles and say whatever they want without considering the impact on others,” he noted, stressing that irresponsible commentary can harm people’s dignity, peace, and security.

Ephson warned that the pursuit of popularity and financial gain is increasingly overshadowing the core values of journalism, a trend he described as dangerous to both media credibility and national cohesion.

He called for intensified public education and professional training to ensure that media practitioners and content creators uphold ethical standards.

“We must guide people to do the right thing, not just chase fame and money at the expense of others,” he emphasized.

His remarks come amid growing debates over misinformation, unregulated digital platforms, and the responsibility of media actors in safeguarding truth and accountability in Ghana’s democratic space.
