NDC Moves to Prevent Dual Roles Ahead of Internal Elections – Mahdi Jibril

The Director of Elections and IT of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mahdi Jibril, has outlined new internal measures aimed at strengthening party discipline and preventing conflicts of interest ahead of upcoming internal contests.

In an exclusive interview granted on Kessben TV’s Maakye show, Jibril emphasized that no individual will be allowed to hold dual positions within the party structure. According to him, the directive is part of broader efforts to ensure fairness, transparency, and unity as the NDC reorganizes at all levels.

He stressed that party officials with key responsibilities, particularly at the branch and constituency levels, will not be permitted to contest in elections that fall under their administrative oversight. This, he explained, is to avoid situations where individuals supervise processes in which they have a personal stake.

“We will not engage in practices where people manage polling station or constituency elections while also contesting,” the directive noted, adding that the party must remain “focused on a common goal.”

The guidelines, however, are said to exempt Public Relations Officers (PROs), suggesting a more flexible approach for communication roles within the party.

Jibril further indicated that the NDC is poised to address internal weaknesses and reorganize effectively to position itself strongly for future elections. He warned that should the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) make missteps, especially in by-elections, the NDC would be ready to capitalize.

The directive also referenced past experiences, including the party’s 2008 electoral victory, when officials like Ama Baanyiwah Doe, Baba Jamal, Ofosu Ampofo, Haruna Iddrisu were appointed into the government and as result they refused to contest in the party’s executive positions, a guide for current restructuring efforts.

The move is seen as part of a wider strategy by the NDC to consolidate its base and present a united front as Ghana edges closer to another electoral cycle.
