Per the laws, marital cases should be heard in chambers, not open hearing – Oheneba Ansu Diabour, Law lecturer

Law lecturer Oheneba Ansu Diabour of Central University has clarified misconceptions surrounding how marital cases are handled in court, stating that such matters are typically not conducted in open public hearings.
According to him, although Ghana’s legal system generally favors transparency through public proceedings, issues involving marriage, divorce, and family disputes are treated differently due to their sensitive nature. He explained that these cases are often handled “in chambers,” meaning they are heard privately by a judge rather than in a fully open courtroom.
“Per the law, many people think marital issues are done in public hearings, but in practice, they are handled in chambers,” he noted, emphasizing that this approach helps protect the privacy and dignity of the individuals involved.
Oheneba Ansu Diabour added that the legal system balances openness with discretion, especially in cases where personal and emotional details could have lasting effects if publicly disclosed. He urged the public to better understand these legal procedures to avoid misinformation.
