Member of Parliament for Kumasi and Chairman of Parliament’s Human Rights Committee, Hon. Ernest Yaw Anim, has strongly denied allegations by Nana Frimpong Ziega that he engaged Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Sam George, in discussions on LGBTQ+ issues during an overseas trip.
Responding to the claims, Hon. Anim stated unequivocally that he has never traveled with Hon. Sam George to any destination and has not held any such discussions with him.
“I have not traveled with Hon. Sam George anywhere,” he clarified. “I chaired a Human Rights Committee trip to Geneva, and I did not even cross paths with him during that visit.”
The Kumawu MP described the allegations as unfounded and called on Nana Frimpong Ziega to substantiate his claims with credible evidence.
“Ziega should come up with evidence and be clear about the exact conversation he is referring to so we can address it accordingly,” Hon. Anim stressed.
He further emphasized that while he respects Hon. Sam George in his capacity as a minister, there is no working relationship between them that would involve joint travel or policy discussions on LGBTQ+ matters.
“I respect him as a minister, but I do not work with him. I have not had any discussion on LGBTQ+ issues with him,” he added.
Hon. Anim also cautioned against making defamatory statements without proof, warning that individuals must be held accountable for unsubstantiated allegations.
“Ziega should be careful. One cannot simply defame others without substantiating such serious claims,” he said.
Touching on his role in Parliament, the MP reaffirmed his committee’s commitment to addressing human rights matters, including LGBTQ+ issues, which he noted have recently come under consideration.
“We are committed to working within our mandate on human rights issues, including the LGBTQ+ matters that have recently come before us,” he stated.
He concluded by clarifying the distinction between his office and the Communications Ministry, noting that the two operate independently.
“My office is not under the Communications Ministry, and the Communications Ministry is not under my office. We simply do not travel with ministers,” he said.
The allegations by Nana Frimpong Ziega have sparked public interest, but Hon. Anim’s firm rebuttal underscores the need for evidence-based discourse in matters of public concern.
