When Ghanaian politicians go into opposition, they think more about the Nation than when they are in Government – Kwasi Mensah
Political analyst Kwasi Mensah has sparked discussion with comments he made on Kessben Maakye, suggesting that Ghanaian politicians often appear more nationalistic when they are in opposition than when they are in government.
Speaking on the programme, Mensah argued that while in opposition, politicians tend to speak more openly about national interest, accountability, and good governance. According to him, opposition figures are usually quick to highlight policy gaps, economic challenges, and social concerns affecting ordinary citizens, presenting themselves as defenders of the public good.
However, he noted that once these same politicians assume power, the focus often shifts toward party interests, political survival, and governance pressures, sometimes at the expense of broader national considerations.
Kwasi Mensah explained that the realities of power, including political commitments and administrative constraints, can dilute the strong patriotic stance politicians display while in opposition.
