Ashanti Regional GPRTU Chairman Sumaila Boakye confirms 90% compliance with 15% fare reduction

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), Sumaila Boakye, announced on Kessben FM that approximately 90% of commercial drivers in the region have adhered to the 15% fare reduction implemented last Saturday.

This adjustment follows a nationwide directive by the GPRTU, aiming to alleviate the financial burden on commuters amid fluctuating fuel prices.

The fare reduction was officially announced by the GPRTU, with the implementation commencing on Saturday. Chairman Boakye reported that the majority of drivers have complied with the new fare structure, reflecting a significant step towards easing transportation costs for passengers. However, he acknowledged that a small fraction of drivers have yet to adjust their fares accordingly.

Despite the high compliance rate, some drivers have been resistant to the fare reduction, citing ongoing economic challenges such as the high cost of spare parts and vehicle maintenance. In response, the GPRTU has urged commuters to report any instances of non-compliance to the nearest police station, emphasizing that unauthorized fare increases are illegal and detrimental to the public

Commuters have largely welcomed the fare reduction, expressing relief over the decrease in transportation costs. Many passengers have reported paying lower fares, which has been particularly beneficial for daily commuters . However, some passengers have noted that not all drivers have uniformly implemented the fare changes, leading to occasional confusion

Chairman Boakye emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between the GPRTU, drivers, and commuters to ensure the sustainability of the fare reduction. He also highlighted the need for ongoing dialogue with regulatory bodies to address the underlying economic factors affecting the transport sector.
