There Should Be Law Reforms to Curb Overcrowding in Our Prisons – Richard Bukari (CSP)

The PRO of Ashanti Regional Prisons, CSP Richard Bukari, has called for urgent legal reforms to help address the growing issue of overcrowding in Ghana’s prisons, particularly the Kumasi Central Prisons.
He emphasized that individuals convicted of minor, non-violent crimes should be given alternative forms of punishment such as community service and fines, According to him, this approach will significantly reduce the pressure on the already congested prison facilities.
Speaking on the Maakye Morning Show, CSP Bukari commended the Church of Pentecost for its outstanding initiative in building camp prisons across the country. He noted that these facilities not only help with decongestion but also provide inmates with vocational training opportunities, offering them a chance at reintegration and productivity upon release.
Addressing questions about the relocation of the Kumasi Central Prisons, CSP Bukari disclosed that, through the efforts of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, a parcel of land has already been secured. However, construction is yet to begin as the prison service awaits further support from the government and the Ghana Police Service.
He explained that relocating a prison requires meticulous planning. Essential infrastructure such as courts, hospitals, staff accommodation, and nearby police stations must all be in place for the new facility to be effective and secure.
CSP Bukari further raised concerns about the location of the Kumasi Central Prisons, stating that its placement in the heart of a bustling urban center poses significant security risks.
Finally, he appealed for logistical support, especially vehicles to help transport inmates to hospitals and other essential services.
