Create Language Space: It’s not everything you say, Even a fool can appear wise by keeping silent and holding their tongue – Rev. Vincent Kankam (Sofo Kankam)

Reverend Vincent Kankam, with his subject of the week on Food for Thought about Creating Spaces, has touched on a growing cultural concern: the overuse of speech in personal and social communication.

Speaking on Friday, he stated that not everything needs to be said, and often, wisdom is found in restraint. He particularly encouraged women, though not exclusively, to “create language space,” a concept he described as the intentional practice of choosing silence or fewer words in situations where explanation or commentary might be excessive or unnecessary.

Reverend Kankam grounded his message in Scripture, referencing Proverbs 17:28: “Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue.” This verse, he said, is a powerful reminder of the value of quietness not as a form of suppression, but as a strategy of strength, clarity, and wisdom.

“Too many times we talk ourselves into trouble,” Rev. Kankam said. “We feel the pressure to explain every decision, justify every feeling, and speak up on every issue. But sometimes the most powerful thing you can do is to remain quiet, not out of fear, but out of control and confidence.”

His message challenges the assumption that more talking equals more truth. Instead, it suggests that wisdom often whispers, and in the silence, clarity is born.
