Rev. Vincent Kankam reveals Veteran Sports Journalist Sir Joe Laka was his English teacher at OKESS

Rev. Vincent Kankam, the host of Food for Thought on Kessben FM, has shared that respected sports journalist Sir Joe Laka once taught him English during his senior high school days at Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School (OKESS) in Kumasi.
Speaking fondly of his former teacher during a one on one interview on Kessben TV with Mr Bonez, Rev. Kankam recounted his days as a science student at OKESS, being shaped by the sharp and charismatic teaching of Joe Laka.
“I studied science at OKESS,” Rev. Kankam said, “but one of the people who had a great impact on my life wasn’t even from the science department. It was Sir Joe Laka. Yes — the same Sir Joe Laka from Kessben Media. He taught me English.”
Sir Joe Laka, now a household name in Ghanaian sports broadcasting and a cornerstone of the Kessben Media team, is widely respected not just for his deep knowledge of sports, but for his mentorship and contributions to education over the years. Long before his voice became a staple on the airwaves, he was inspiring young minds in the classroom Rev. Kankam being one of them.
This revelation adds a special dimension to the camaraderie within Kessben Media, where both men now contribute their voices and passions to inspire, inform, and uplift audiences across the nation. It also stands as a testament to the power of mentorship, how a teacher’s influence can echo across generations and fields.
The story has resonated with viewers and social media users alike, with many praising the humility of Rev. Kankam and the enduring legacy of Sir Joe Laka. As one fan put it, “It’s beautiful to see a former student and teacher now working side by side as media colleagues. It reminds us that the seeds sown in the classroom often grow in places we never expect.
