One million coders program : Over 90,000 young Ghanaians registered interest Within days of opening applications- Sam George

Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations of Ghana, Samuel Nartey George has said a total of 91, 847 applicants have enrolled in the coding programme initiative.

He revealed that the initial plan was to pilot the program with 260 students, but the response was overwhelming, with 91,847 applications received.

According to him, the staggering figures support president Mahama’s vision of transforming the digital ecosystem.

Speaking at the programme’s launch held in Accra, he said the initiative’s courses will cover fundamentals of coding. It will also offer elective courses.

He further stated that, the programme is expected to alleviate unemployment by creating millions of jobs across the continent by 2030.

Mr president. We planned to do the pilot with 260 students but within the first four hours of announcing, we had over 4,000 applications. We decided to do a double track and do 520. As at this morning, about 30 minutes ago, the number of applications we have received is 91, 847 applications. This speaks to the visionary nature of your plan and vision to transform our digital ecosystem.

” This initiative is a strategic investment in our youths, empowering them with in- demand digital skills that align with the jobs to be created under the 24- hour economy policy. Ghana faces a youth unemployment rate of over 12 per cent. And the digital economy is projected to create millions of new jobs across Africa by 2030″ he stressed.
