The Minister for Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, Hon. Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah, has hailed the significant progress made in the Gulf of Guinea Northern Regions Social Cohesion (SOCO) Project, a flagship initiative aimed at driving sustainable development and preventing the spread of conflict in Ghana’s northern regions.
Addressing a press engagement in Accra, the Minister revealed that the project has achieved notable milestones since its launch in November 2022 by Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. These accomplishments include the construction and rehabilitation of 556 infrastructure projects, creation of 3,748 jobs, capacity enhancement for 4,709 local development actors, and support for 9,954 farmers and rural enterprises.
The Minister emphasized that the project’s second phase will focus on infrastructure development, with an investment of GHS 496,743,751 (USD 43,195,109). He underscored the project’s people-centered approach, aimed at creating resilient communities and empowering citizens.
The SOCO Project seeks to address the vulnerabilities of border communities, improve social services and infrastructure, enhance youth employability, and strengthen local institutions. The Minister expressed gratitude to partners, stakeholders, and the project team for their dedication and support.
This initiative is a testament to the government’s commitment to promoting social cohesion and sustainable development in Ghana’s northern regions. As the project progresses, it is expected to have a lasting impact on the lives of citizens and contribute to the country’s overall growth and stability.
