Statement : “CARE” Ghana Condemns The Exploitation Of Religion For The Pursuit Of Political Power

The recent trend of insidious intrusion of religious rhetoric into political campaigns is Atrocious and disturbing.

Such manipulative tactics intended to exploit religion for political gain not only undermine the very fabric of our democracy but also threaten the peace and unity we strive to maintain.

The unfortunate abuse of religious affiliations and beliefs to garner support and sway public opinion by some leading figures of the ruling party is dangerous.

This blatant pandering to religious sentiments not only disregards the secular nature of our democracy but also jeopardizes the delicate balance of religious coexistence that Ghana has long strived to maintain.

In a volatile region where interfaith tensions may be simmering, the use of religion as a political tool is particularly worrying.

It has the potential to ignite communal violence, sow seeds of mistrust among different religious communities, and destabilize the peace and security of the country as a whole.

It is with grave concern that “CARE” GHANA stands firm in our denouncement of this egregious practice. The utilization of religion as a tool for political manipulation is not only unethical but also deeply divisive.

In a democratic society, the foundation of governance should rest on the principles of equality, justice, and secularism.

To allow religion to be wielded as a weapon in the arena of politics is to betray these fundamental values.

We call on the National Peace Council, comprised of heads of religious bodies and chiefs to fulfil their sacred duty.

It is imperative that they vehemently admonish the exploitation of religion in political campaigns and elucidate the dire implications of such actions.

Religion should serve as a source of solace, compassion, and moral guidance for individuals, not as a pawn in the pursuit of power.

When religion becomes entangled in the political sphere, it not only sows seeds of discord but also threatens the very essence of religious freedom and tolerance.

As a nation, we must remain vigilant in safeguarding the secular nature of our democracy. We must resist any attempts to divide us along religious lines and instead strive for inclusivity, understanding, and mutual respect.

All those in such enterprise for political gain must learn to abstain and instead focus on constructive dialogue, inclusive policies, and genuine efforts to address the needs and aspirations of all citizens, regardless of their religious affiliations.

Ghana’s future prosperity and stability depend on our collective commitment to upholding the principles of democracy, secularism, and religious tolerance.

We implore the diplomatic community to take a decisive stance against the exploitation of religion in political campaigns and condemn such acts.

Those who engage in such conduct must be held accountable for their reckless disregard for the well-being of our nation. Let us work together to uphold the principles of democracy, foster unity among our diverse populace, and forge a path towards a brighter, more harmonious future for all.

Thank you.

Signed

David Kumi Addo
Executive Director (“CARE” GHANA)
