Sabbath day: SDA Church petitions EC to change December 7 election from Saturday
The Seventh-day Adventist Church is advocating for a change in the election date, December 7, since it falls on a holy day for worship.
The church, which wants to prevent elections from taking place on Ghana’s holy days, suggests rescheduling the polls for the first or second Tuesday in November in order to promote inclusive democracy.
The church petitioned the Electoral Commission (EC) stating that the elections would have to be rescheduled from the scheduled December 7 date since it falls on a Saturday and will interfere with Sabbath, a sacred day honoring God.
It stated that “In anticipation of changing the date for general elections from December 7 to the first (1st) or second (2nd) Tuesday of November, the Leadership of the Seventh-day Adventist Church met with the Electoral Commission (EC) on Wednesday, June 7.”
In an interview with Joy News, Solace Asafo, the director of women’s ministry at the Seventh-day Adventist Church Southern Ghana Union Conference, expressed the church’s desire that elections in Ghana won’t take place on any holy day.
