#OccupyBoGdemo: Protesters call for the resignation of the governor of Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison

The marchers, who were mostly dressed in solemn black and striking red clothing with many donning brilliant red caps, are united in their demand that Dr. Ernest Addison, the governor of the Bank of Ghana, and his two deputy governors quit.

Their requests are a result of worrying information about the Central Bank’s financial situation.

The Bank of Ghana had a staggering loss of GH60.81 billion during the 2022 fiscal year, as revealed by the protestors. Due to this enormous financial setback, there are serious questions regarding the bank’s management and accountability.

Additionally, the use of more than $250 million for the construction of a new headquarters has drawn criticism.

The demonstrators are critical of the distribution of such large sums of money, particularly in light of the country’s massive financial losses and current economic difficulties.

The #OccupyBoGdemo campaign highlights how urgently Ghana’s Central Bank needs to be transparent, accountable, and practicing solid financial management.

It also draws attention to the growing discontent among citizens with the country’s leading institutions’ financial soundness and management.

It is unclear how the Bank of Ghana and the government will react to these calls for reform and accountability as the protests pick up steam.
