Leaked audio plotting against IGP: COP Mensah interdicted
In conjunction with a continuing investigation into an audio recording that was leaked regarding the removal of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the Ghana Police Service has interdicted former Director General of the Technical Department, COP George Alex Mensah.
On September 6, 2023, COP Mensah received notification of this interdiction.
A plot to overthrow IGP Dampare is purportedly being discussed by COP George Alex Mensah, Superintendent George Asare, and former Northern Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Daniel Bugri Naabu, according to a recorded discussion.
IGP Dampare was referred to by COP Mensah as the “worst ever” police chief he has met in his 31 years of service during a hearing before an ad hoc committee of Parliament. During his second appearance before the parliamentary committee, he reiterated this opinion.
The ad hoc committee is looking into the tape because it has sparked worries about possible misbehavior among police officers.
