GCTU launches Ladies Association to challenge women to aspire to greater heights
The Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) has launched its ladies Association at a colourful ceremony at its Tesano main campus in Accra.
The launch themed, “Women Supporting Women” seeks to empower and promote the interests of women within the University and to champion also their welfare in all endeavours on campus.
Addressing a cross section of women at the inauguration, the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the GCTU, Prof. Robert Ebo Hinson who represented the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Emmanuel Ohene Afoakwa said the Association must place a high premium on the role of women and ensure that women form part of the growth and development of the university regardless of status, rank, gender among others.
He said research have shown that women are still under represented as lecturers, researchers as well as in leadership positions and encouraged them to aspire to higher heights in all working jurisdictions, adding that the gesture will enable the university authorities to factor policies and initiatives that will support women’s transformation and advancement.
According to him, the Association will create a platform for women at the university to engage management to address gender disparities on campus and said GCTU women interfaced with internal and external customers of the university therefore members of the Association must adhere to give excellent quality service at all times and demonstrate also compassion and support to women’s welfare and activities.
The Pro Vice Chancellor encouraged the Association to devise various mentorship and training programmes to build capacities of members and urged them to operate as role models for the younger women to emulate.
Prof. Robert Hinson urged the Association to draw up policies and initiatives to empower women through career guidance to enable women gain self-confidence to aspire to leadership positions in their chosen careers particularly managerial roles in the university.
He added that the university must put systems in place to ensure that advertised positions at GCTU must make provision for women and called on women to brand themselves in every working space and stay on track to enable them meet career job openings.
In her remarks, the President of the Association, Mrs Susan Aryee charged the Association to roll out policies to build capacities of women to enable them come out of their comfort zones and apply for challenging positions in the university and come up with initiatives and programmes to help address gender inequalities.
She however called for periodic encounter with members of the Association to enable them be abreast with emerging trends in the fields of womanhood and the role they must exhibit on campus.
In a related development, the Association used the occasion to also unveil a logo depicting the role women at the work place amidst pomp and pageantry.
